Since 1308, the building has housed the Pious Hospital of the Knights of Saint Anthony of Vienne. The hospital had 22 permanent beds, rooms reserved for clergy and women, and also provided important assistance to passing pilgrims. They were offered a free pound of bread, a flask of wine, a bowl of soup with meat broth, and a bed for a day and a night’s rest.
\nFree care was also provided to the village’s poor and the chronically ill, including the services of the municipal doctor and surgeon, with whom the Pious Hospital had an agreement. Starting in the 15th century, thanks to substantial bequests, the institution was also able to distribute, every Easter, a pound and a half of wheat flour to all the citizens of San Daniele, a tradition that continued until 1797.
\nDuring the 19th century, the building underwent several adaptation and restoration projects. In 1866, the wealthy Fraterna, which ran the hospital, purchased the Dominican convent, designating it as the institution’s new headquarters. It subsequently sold the building on Via Garibaldi to the Community of San Daniele, which, after a thorough renovation directed by the architect Franceschinis, became the town hall in 1869.
