The square is known for its 16th-century fountain, designed by Giovanni da Udine, which adds a touch of Renaissance elegance to the surrounding area.<br \/>\nHistorically, Piazza Cattaneo was known as &#8220;Piazza degli Ebrei&#8221; (Jewish Square) because it housed the local synagogue, located in a courtyard surrounded by houses. During World War I and the Austro-German occupation, it was used as a horse shelter and suffered severe damage before being demolished.<br \/>\nThe square is surrounded by historic buildings, some dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries.
