Colloredo Castle in Monte Albano, one of the most fascinating manor houses in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, was built starting in 1302 by Baron William of Waldsee, Viscount of Mels, on a panoramic hill near the ancient village of Mels.
\nOriginally a defensive castle at the center of the fiefdom, over the centuries it was transformed into a refined noble residence, retaining its historic charm intact. The building was expanded by the descendants of the Colloredo Mels Waldsee family, becoming an important cultural and architectural landmark in the area.
\nToday, the castle represents a perfect example of the evolution from a medieval fortification to a stately home: inside, you can admire traces of frescoes attributed to Giovanni da Udine, stucco decorations, elegant roof terraces, and evocative Italian gardens. The complex is completed by the noble chapel (now the parish church) and numerous historical spaces of great value.
\nThe castle is also linked to important figures in Italian culture: the Friulian poet Ermes di Colloredo and the writer Ippolito Nievo, who drew inspiration for his famous novel, “Confessions of an Italian,” lived here.
\nThe castle is currently undergoing a major restoration and enhancement project by the Region. You can visit the West Wing, home to the Friulian Hill Community, and admire the Guardhouse, the Red House, the East Wing, and the imposing towers from the outside, including the striking Porta Tower, also known as the “Clock Tower.”
