Arched gate redesigned in 1579 by the renowned architect Andrea Palladio. The original structure was part of the city’s medieval walls, serving as a monumental entrance to the historic center.
The external façade of the Portonat features a large semicircular arch, clad in rusticated stone blocks, flanked by two projecting pilasters supporting a frieze decorated with paterae alternating with triglyphs and bucrania. Above the projecting molded cornice is a small balcony enclosed by a stone balustrade.
The inner façade is more sober, with a semicircular arch framed by alternating stone blocks of different sizes and a highlighted keystone. The tower has four regularly arranged openings framed in smooth stone.
