Specific information
Arcano Castle, one of the best preserved in Friuli, stands on a panoramic hill overlooking the plain between San Daniele del Friuli and Spilimbergo. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages and are linked to the ancient Arcano family, who for centuries played a prominent role in the history of the Friuli region. Characterized by a striking double crenellated wall, an entrance tower once protected by a drawbridge and a moat, the castle represents an outstanding example of Friulian castle architecture. Inside, it preserves historic rooms, marble fireplaces, frescoes, family portraits, and works of art that recount centuries of noble life.
Among the most fascinating stories linked to the Arcano Castle is that of Todeschina di Prampero, the protagonist of one of Friuli’s most famous legends. In the 17th century, Todeschina married Count Francesco d’Arcano. It is said that the marriage was marked by deep jealousy and constant conflicts, culminating in tragedy: the young woman was murdered inside the castle. Legend has it that, before dying, she managed to leave her initials imprinted in blood on the wall. Those traces would remain visible for centuries, fueling tales and mysteries passed down from generation to generation.
It is also said that the woman’s body was hidden within the castle walls and only found many years later during restoration work. Even today, this story adds to the castle’s charm, where documented history and popular tradition intertwine in a tale capable of evoking medieval atmospheres and timeless charm.
Even today, Arcano Castle fascinates visitors with the grandeur of its defensive structures, the wealth of historical evidence, and the splendid view that extends from the moraine hills to the Alpine arc.
